MERIVAL NO BRAKES

Under the stage name of Merival, Toronto-based singer-songwriter Anna Horvath has dropped the beautiful ‘No Brakes’ in support of her upcoming debut album Lesson, due for release on August 2nd 2019. The tune boldly explores mental health, looking into the strangely relevant question of whether an artist needs to be in a darker place to produce ‘good’ music. Musically, crunchy acoustic guitar harmonies and waltz-like rhythms bounce through the track, juxtaposing the lyrical content, while the video follows along slightly tongue-in-cheek. Of the video, Merival states “whereas lyrically we had a serious subject: depression, and does feeling worse make better art? — This topic was given a spin with contrasting musical elements, for the video we took a kind of goofy narrative and tried to lend some gravitas to the actions around it”. -Dan Peeke
